We did a daytrip from Urumqi to Turpan, an important trade center located along the Silk Road. We visited Jiaohe Ruins, ancient remains in the middle of the desert. This historical place was mysterious and interesting; you can spend some hours walking along the many trails. The weather is very hot during the day, so bring lots of water. Next, we visited the free Turpan Museum. Excellent way to learn about Turpan highlights (and see some well-preserved mummies!!). The museum is fun and interesting and gives you an idea about the history of Turpan. Later we got back to Urumqi, 2 and a half bus ride.
