Salta is a city in the north part of Argentina. It is a good base for visiting the surrounding villages and towns, where you can feel the indigenous culture and enjoy the landscape.
We stayed 3 nights at La Posada de Don Simon. Good location and budget friendly, but the beds are not so great and the dorm’s room is pretty small. The hostel offers tours for all the surrounding attractions, but the tours leave very early so you miss out the included breakfast.

We booked 2 different day tours through the hostel. We didn’t have too much time to spend around Salta so we thought the tours would be a good solution for us, but if you have more time I definitely recommend to rent a car and explore the surrounding area on your own for few days.
The first day trip was visiting the colorful ‘Humahuaca Canyon’. The tour included a quick visit in Jujuy, Tilcara, the town Pumaraca and the viewpoint of ‘The Hill of the Seven Colors’, and Humahuaca Canyon.
A day tour to Humahuaca, impressive landscape, but maybe too much for a day trip
We enjoyed the beautiful landscape and viewpoints, but we felt like it’s too much for a day tour from Salta. We visited many villages but only had little time in each place. Most of the time we spent in the mini van. Most of the landscape we saw from the window durring the ride was more beautiful than the specific places were we stopped. Few times we asked if it is possible to do a quick stop for pictures during the ride, but unfortunately the guide did’nt allow it and also wasn’t interesting or friendly.
The Hill of the Seven Colors
In general we felt disappoinded and tired from this tour to Humahuaca and the surrounding area, but hoped to have a better experience in our second tour.
The second tour we booked was to the village ‘Cachi’ and the surrounding area, and it was much nicer. Our guide was friendly and we did many stops along the way and had many opportunities for taking beautiful pics. In fact, we didn’t spend so much time in the town Cachi itself, but more on the viewpoints and the nature on the way. We loved the desert landscape and we saw so many cactus everywhere in Los Cardones National Park.
